Marbling Clay

In this workshop, we’re exploring one of the most striking techniques in pottery — marbling clay.

By combining different coloured clays, you’ll create swirling patterns that can look like stone, smoke or flowing water. Every piece will be completely unique, shaped by the way your hands move the clay on the wheel.

We’ll work through three core forms: a cup, a vase and a bowl. You’ll start with a simple cup to see how the marbling comes alive as you throw, before moving on to a taller vase where ribbons of colour travel and flow up the walls.

Then we’ll take on the bowl — the most challenging of the three forms. You’ll learn how opening and stretching the clay can reveal beautiful patterns both inside and out. And if your bowl decides to collapse, congratulations — you’ve just made a plate!

We’ll also explore how to prepare and layer contrasting clays, build your marble block without over-mixing the colours, and trim your finished pieces to reveal patterns hidden beneath the surface.

This workshop is beginner-friendly, but there’s endless depth to the technique. Every combination of clay, every movement and every throw creates something different.

Think of it as a playful collaboration between you and the clay — you provide the movement, and the clay reveals the artwork.
